Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics

Research in the Institute covers a broad range of linguistic topics, focusing on Estonian and other Finno-Ugric languages but also including other languages. We teach Estonian and several other Finno-Ugric languages. The quality of our linguistic research and teaching is evident from our placement in the top quarter of the best 1000 universities in the world in the field of linguistics (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021). Our researchers investigate aspects of morphosyntax, semantics and phonetics as well as sociolinguistics, language acquisition, and computational linguistics.

Institute in numbers

Our institute has 4 departments, 2 laboratories and 3 centers, including 1 interdisciplinary consortium. The institute employs 101 people, including 6 professors, 13 associate professors, 14 lecturers, 21 researchers, 3 junior lecturer, 28 junior researchers and 2 teachers. The institute has 6 programs, including 1 Bachelor's program, 4 Master's programs and 1 Doctoral degree program. There are 225 students, including 90 in Bachelor's studies, 97 in Master's studies and 38 in Doctoral studies. There are 16% or 37 foreign students in the institute.
